We’ve touched on the theme of sustainability many times over the past eight months in our show. This is a topic that fits well into the co-operative values as well as the values underlying the social economy – adhering to that triple bottom line – people, planet, profits (in no particular order). Today we are pleased to have with us someone who strives to educate people about sustainable community living.
Today we speak with Brandy MacPherson who works with O.U.R. Ecovillage on Vancouver Island. For those not familiar with what an Ecovillage is, here is a little background from their website (http://www.ourecovillage.org/).
"Ecovillages are full featured settlements in which human activities are harmlessly integrated into the natural world in a way that is supportive of healthy human development and can be successfully continued into the indefinite future (Gilman, 1991,p.37)".
The conversation with Brandy includes the motivation, local community reaction, the pre-design, design, and implementation including rezoning issues, and the the sustainable community model OUR Ecovillage seeks to educate people about.
The episode concludes with a tune from Xavier Rudd, an Australian born solo artist. Here is BC People from his album Live At The Grid B.C. Canada.
