Feminism and Co-ops

Today on Each for All we take a look at feminism and co-operatives.

As a person who was lucky enough to be raised by activist-conscious parents, one of the things in which I’ve always been interested in is the history of how people fight oppression. From our work here at Each For All, we know that the first co-operative was started by workers who needed an affordable alternative to meet their need for food and other goods. Those workers were organizing to fight economic oppression, which made me think: How do groups organize to fight other, more complex, intersections of oppression?

In thinking about answers to this question, I’ve come across quite a few co-ops that are based in feminist ideology, and so that’s what our show is about today: How women have engaged with economic, and political, empowerment!

To provide us with insight into feminism and co-ops, we’ll be speaking with Debby Yaffe, a former member of the now-defunct Everywomans Bookstore here in Victoria.

We will also get a perspective from Kat Griefen of A.I.R. Gallery, which is a New York City co-operative art gallery with a feminist mandate.

But first, we had the pleasure of talking with Barb Wieser from Amazon Bookstore Cooperative in Minneapolis.
