It's a new year, a new season of Each For All, and we're playing up this theme of newness by bringing you an episode all about new co-ops. Studies have shown that the co-operatives most likely to succeed are those that have had the benefit of working with a co-op developer, and that's what we focused on today. We spoke with Joy Emmanuel, who coordinated a national research project into the role of co-op developers in Canada that became a book and DVD called Effective Practices in Developing Co-operatives, and also with Marty Frost, a developer with DevCo, one of the most well-known co-op development organizations in the West. To start us off, we had a conversation with returning Each For All guest Vanessa Hammond. Regular listeners will recognize Vanessa from our interview about Mongolian felt-making co-operatives; however, long before she journeyed to Central Asia, Vanessa was developing co-ops ina more local capacity, as a founder of the First Ownership Co-op. The broadcast version of this episode featured the songs "Independent Thief" by Kathleen Edwards from the album Back to Me, as well as "All Walks of Life" and "Hold Me Baby" by the James Cotton Blues Band from the album 35th Anniversary Jam of the James Cotton Blues Band.
